The 4-hour drive from Anchorage to Homer, the halibut fishing capital of the world, is nothing short of spectacular no matter the weather….well at least the 1st 100 miles. This summer was the first time I made the drive after the big Swan Lake fire of last year which is about half-way. Sad. But what was cool and eerie at the same time was all the firewood in bloom across the swaths of black, burned grasses and skinny charred remains of the tiaga forest. The picture posted is from my nomadic traveling buddy & professional photographer Jody Overstreet. The end of the drive is like the cherry on top of an ice cream sundae as you crest the hill to an expansive view of Kachemak Bay, the mountains & glaciers, with the famous Homer Spit punctuating the glistening blue waters like a giant comma. It is even more spectacular on cloudy days. So we were blessed with the next 5 days of rain! Then the second week was glorious sunshine.

You just can't go wrong driving the road from Anchorage to Homer in the summer, even for those of us lucky to live here.
