Island life in the Cove..
After a rainy week on the Homer spit being a “spit rat,” it was time to visit my long-time dear friend Susan in Halibut Cove across the bay. For sure, this is a piece of heaven that I get to savor annually for a few days. Perched high up on a rocky pinnacle on a pointy corner of the island is what seems like her house of glass. Tall, skinny, side-by-side windows revealing placid or stormy or sparkling waters. The days were mostly sunny meaning lazy morning coffee on the deck. And in the evening, grilling salmon on the deck. Good weather meant a walk down the trail to the other side of the island being ever vigilant for the black bears. Seven had been reported on the island this year. Walks are noisy affairs clapping and yelling “hey bear, hey bear.” But mostly it was 4 days of just enjoying the peace and beauty of Halibut Cove with old dear friends catching up and pretty much doing nothing but eating, drinking (coffee/wine), talking then leaving with a big wide content grin on my face. A water taxi ride took me back to the Homer spit and a “regular” taxi then took me to pick up my van that had been worked on while I was on the island.
